They've also been getting a lot of mileage for the past 10+ years off of some success that was largely due to Vince Young. They're sort of the guy who was a star in his small town fifteen years ago, and still rides that success for free dinners. They've got a lot of talent there, but you'd think that top recruiting from one of the biggest football states in the nation would lead to better success.
It's all about coaching. They made some bad hires after Mack Brown left. Just like Nebraska made some bad hires after Bo Pelini left. Florida State with Bowden. Hardly means they'll suck forever. Alabama disappeared for almost a decade. USC was an 8-4 program for 20 years before Pete Carroll got there.

The issues at Texas run deeper than just the coach.

Lack of facilities? Money? No place to recruit? It's a high stress job that needs a certain individual who can handle that. Charlie Strong and T.H. couldn't. That's what happens when you replace Mack Brown with coordinators. If they would have hired someone like Mike Dantonio we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The culture at the university itself. The culture within the football program. The players that come from the state of Texas itself. The lack of success at Texas and Texas A&M speaks volumes to me. It's not just the coaches.

Agreed. It all starts with the Head Coach. You need a big personality to be successful there. Mack Brown was perfect. Instead of getting the "hot young coordinator" or guy that has had one year of success as a HC they need a guy who has run a big program somewhere else. They should have made a bigger play at Chris Pederson before Washington did. A&M did that with Fisher, UT didnt.

But why is Texas unable to hire that guy? Why are they settling for their 3rd, 4th, or 5th option? Not an exact parallel, but lots of similarities to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.
