RECRUITING: Cyclones land Demarion Watson

T.J. Otzelberger’s first full recruiting class as the head coach at Iowa State is shaping up to be one of the best in school history.

Three-star Minnesota forward Demarion Watson announced his pledge to Iowa State on Monday via his Twitter account. The Totino-Grace product picking the Cyclones should move the program into the top-10 of 247‘s team class rankings for the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Watson, a 6-foot-6, 175-pound Minneapolis native, is considered the No. 140 player in the 2022 class, No. 35 small forward and No. 6 prospect in Minnesota by 247Composite. He commits to Iowa State over offers from Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Creighton, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, Stanford and a handful of other programs.

Once the class rankings are updated to reflect Watson’s commitment, Iowa State will likely sit somewhere just outside of the top-five classes in the country, albeit with more commitments than most other programs. Still, the addition of Watson to a class that already included Ames High star Tamin Lipsey and four-star Minnesota prep standout Eli King is a statement about Otzelberger and his staff’s ability to identify, recruit and land their targets.
