WRESTLING: Cyclones no contest for Sooners in Norman

The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State athletics communications.

NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 16 Iowa State wrestling team (7-4, 1-1 Big 12) fell to No. 7 Oklahoma (9-2, 4-1 Big 12) 28-9 on Friday night. The Cyclones are now 1-1 in Big 12 Conference action this year.

Three Iowa State grapplers won their bouts on the mat at the Lloyd Noble Center. Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, Tanner Weatherman and Marcus Harrington were all victorious in their efforts.

The Iowa State, Oklahoma and Arizona State gymnastics teams accompanied the ISU wrestling dual as a part of Oklahoma’s Beauty and the Beast promotion. The Cyclones posted a score of 193.850 on the evening to take second in the triangular meet.

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma

The dual got off to a sluggish start for the Cyclones. After dropping the first four matches, Iowa State trailed Oklahoma 16-0. At 157-pounds, Rodriguez-Spencer put the Cardinal and Gold on the board.

The Cheektowaga, N.Y. native squared off against Oklahoma’s Brock Wingbermuehle. Rodriguez-Spencer scored on a flurry of first-period takedowns and held a 6-3 advantage after one. He solidified his 10-8 dec. over the Sooner with two more takedowns in the final period. Rodriguez-Spencer is now 16-7 on the year.

No. 10 Weatherman didn’t surrender a takedown to No. 8 Clark Glass in his 6-2 upset over the Oklahoma wrestler. The senior captain connected on two takedowns and rode hard on top. Since the turn of the calendar year, Weatherman has posted a 10-1 record with five bonus-point victories.

The 197-pound match-up was between Harrington and the Sooners’ Brad Johnson. This match started off slow, witch each wrestler trading escape points to begin the second and third periods. Late in the third though, Harrington connected on a shot that was not initially awarded as a takedown. Following a challenge by head coach Kevin Jackson, the official reversed the call on the mat to give Harrington the advantage he needed to notch a 3-2 decision over Johnson.
