Cyclones dominate Texas on Halloween night

AMES — Iowa State (3-5, 2-3) desperately needed to put one in the win column and on Halloween night, that’s exactly what happened in a convincing 24-0 homecoming shutout over Texas (3-4, 2-3).

It marked Iowa State’s first shutout victory since defeating Kansas 34-0 in 2013. It was the last non-Kansas conference shutout for a Cyclone defense since Iowa State defeated Baylor 41-0 in 2001.

The Cyclones manhandled Texas on both sides of the ball and the box score backs that up. Iowa State compiled 426 yards to only 204 by the Longhorns. Iowa State had 28 first downs to only 11 by Texas. The time of possession stat was a landslide, favoring the Cyclones 37:25 to 22:35.

Joel Lanning threw for 188 yards and a touchdown (19-37) in his first start at quarterback for the Cyclones. Redshirt freshman running back Mike Warren cleared 100 yards (finished with 157) for the fifth time in six career starts while running for a touchdown to boot.

Up next for the Cyclones is a 6 p.m. kick vs. the Oklahoma Sooners next Saturday. Oklahoma beat Kansas 62-7 on Saturday.
